It has been an honor serving on the Board of Trustees for the Huntington Beach City School District over the past six years. Prior to retiring from the field of Education, I served as an Educator for 39 years as a teacher and administrator in all levels of public education (K-12). During that time, I had the honor of working for over 28 years here in the City of Huntington Beach at Moffett Elementary School, Sowers Middle School, and Marina High School as Principal additionally serving as a teacher and principal in the Charter Oak Unified School District prior to that. Over those years I have participated in and observed many educational reform movements and changes, including many fiscally challenging years, the COVID pandemic and school modernization. I have seen outstanding programs that were reduced or cut due to severe budget issues, and cuts in personnel, some of the most outstanding educators I have worked with were impacted.
While all of these issues and concerns presented seemingly unreachable challenges, the public education system continues to strive for excellence in meeting the needs of its students and families. Although the fiscal challenges are seemingly improving, we have much to do. As we continue the implementation of high-quality education in our district, we are excited about our new vision, mission, and strategic plan. Now more than ever it's time for strong and experienced leadership to not just maintain our quality schools but continue looking for ways to improve what we do; improve the facilities our students learn in and help our employees feel valued and important in their jobs and meet the demands presented to us post-COVIC.
The Huntington Beach City School District Governing Board and Administration have a long history of excellence and as a seasoned educator, I continue to bring experience in the classroom, as a school leader and a long-time citizen of the City of Huntington Beach. During my time on the Board, we have passed an extensive bond measure in order to move our schools into the 21st Century in facilities and teaching techniques. We have implemented an innovative school safety program that will become a model for our nation while planning and implementing necessary changes to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Our programs for special needs students are improving and leaning on current research to better serve all of the unique learning styles of our children, we have created model STEAM programs and continue to offer programs in the arts as well as providing after-school sports and clubs for students as well as improving our teacher's and other staff salaries in order to keep the best in Huntington Beach and maintain a balanced budget!
It is in the best interest of the Huntington Beach City School District to vote for the leaders in our community who have the background and experience to respect our community’s needs, assist their employees to achieve excellence, provide sound and researched based decisions regarding the current issues of safety and health, and provide the most outstanding and memorable learning experience possible for its students, the most important part of what we do.
